Monitor Definition - What is a Monitor?

A monitor refers to a speaker or listening device which allows the person controlling the audio to "monitor" the sound. For example, a sound person at a live performance might have an in ear monitor, like an ear bud, so they can hear from their position what the audio sounds like on stage, and another monitor that allows them to hear what the audio sounds like from the speakers pointed toward the audience. A monitor might also be used so that performers on stage can have audio directed at them, so they are able to hear themselves.
