Headroom Definition - What is Headroom?

In the audio production context headroom is the point where the signal handling capacities have reached the maximum level. Going above that level will cause damage to the recording or the audio level. It is kind of a warning area that creates a signal that you cannot go any higher than that range. Many groups have created maximum number and range for headroom and it is very helpful depending on the kind of recording you are making. They are measured in digital full scale which is often shown as DFS.
