Gain Definition - What is Gain?

Gain is a unit of measurement for loudness of audio. However, as opposed to volume, which refers to the final output volume, gain refers to the input volume from the recording source. In other words, gain controls the volume of the signal before it passes through mixing and recording devices, and volume refers to the final output level of that signal as it comes out of the speakers, headphones, or other audio playback device.
